How It's Made

There are several methods to make bulk virgin coconut oil on the market: RBD (refined, bleached, deodorized), dry press, or wet press. These processes create quality coconut oil but nutrients are lost during the production process, losing the health benefits of organic coconut oil. At Coconut Co-Op, our organic, virgin coconut oil is cold pressed so that the final product retains the maximum amount of nutrients and health benefits. Freshly picked coconuts from the Coconut Triangle are de-husked and de-pared, and then shredded using a mechanized grating bit. The coconut shreds are mixed with water and placed into a cold press machine to "squeeze" the coconut cream into a filter. The resulting pulp is dried and used to make coconut flour. The coconut milk that is filtered is left overnight to ferment and separate. The mixture separates into coconut cream on top, oil in the middle, and leftover water on the bottom. The virgin coconut oil is whisked into another jar until only a clear oil is left in the jar.

The organic virgin coconut oil from Coconut Co-Op is available for wholesale. Our coconut oil is fair trade and serves a diverse range of purposes including cooking, beauty and hair care, and medicinal. In culinary applications, coconut oil is a good replacement for other cooking oils. It can be used in salads, desserts, whipped toppings, and as a quality ingredient in infant diets. There are reported health benefits of organic coconut oil, and while we are not doctors, our team enjoys oil pulling among other applications. Virgin coconut oil is a natural moisturizer, rejuvenating dry or cracked skin. Applied to hair it can smooth and strengthen, adding shine and acting as a natural leave-in conditioner.
